Inner Field #3, by Ise Sharp, acrylic and ink on canvas, 60x100cm
Inner Fields is a series mapping how memory and identity take shape when belonging is never fixed. Raised between New York, Jamaica, and Tokyo, and navigating multiple cultural and ancestral identities, such as European, West African, and Chinese, I developed an early awareness of inner states, memory, and the instability of belonging. These paintings emerged from that formative landscape and were created while living in Portugal, where place, rhythm, and process played a vital role in their development. They function as both personal repositories and visual meditations.
Each work is built through layered processes that include writing, painted paper, and fragments of family ephemera. Mementos are torn, submerged in paint, and reassembled on the canvas in deliberate, tiled patterns. This method reflects the fragmented nature of memory and the effort to create coherence from lived experience. The recurring tile-like structures draw directly from the Portuguese environment and its cultural tradition of azulejos, where individual fragments come together to form a unified field.
Through the interplay of paper and pigment, the surfaces appear to oscillate, echoing the constant movement of thought and emotion. Rather than depicting specific moments, Inner Fields offers a meditation on interior life. The works transform personal history into a shared language of memory, fragmentation, and quiet resilience, where disparate experiences assemble into a cohesive inner landscape.
