Dizzy Gillespie, or Dizzy on the French Riviera
by Francis Delivré

Medium: Acrylic

Acrylic and vinyl on lacquered hardboard
37x57cm

This portrait of the famous jazz musician gave Francis DELIVRÉ the opportunity to go, once again, beyond mere likeness—to reinforce it and reveal more about the subject.
This trumpeter, renowned for his virtuosity and harmonies, was distinguished by his distorted trumpet with its bell pointing upward and his disproportionately puffed-out cheeks. The painter used these two distinctive features to once again delight in playing with forms: the spherical, golden cheeks echo the instrument’s golden bell, which in turn becomes the moon… and on the sea, ripples, reflections, seagulls, notes, sounds… And this world is that of the Antibes-Juan-les-Pins International Jazz Festival, which is expressed through music in “Dizzy on the French Riviera”!
